An Indian town is falling apart. The buildings in the Himalayan town of Joshimath, a hot spot for many pilgrimages and tricks are cracking up due to soil shifting of the ground surface. Cracks have been reported at more than 600 houses.

Though at this point of time it is not clear to pin point the cause of sinking city but what we are seeing is the result of Land subsidence. Land subsidence is the lowering of the land-surface elevation due to changes that take place underground - naturally or human induced. Its very important to understand what is Land subsidence because it can happen anywhere around us ! When large amounts of groundwater is extracted in quick time without giving enough time to rejuvenate, or when continuous extraction of oil and natural gases, or during under ground mining or when naturally found sediments of limestone, gypsum kind of salts gets dissolved results in Sink holes, land slides, land subsidence or even disastrous floods Land subsidence is a global problem but largely ignored by governments, through out last century many places across globe reported mild to sever land subsidence - San Joaquin Valley in California reporting sinking of land on average 1 foot every year. along with rising sea level issues, many low-lying countries like Netherlands, Tokyo, Indonesia, Thailand are reporting many land sinking incidents. To put in perspective - already 26% of the Netherlands is under sea level and it may reach upto 60% in next hundred years causing serious threats to inhabitants. The recent studies suggest that Land Sunsidence is observed maximum in India due to excessive consumption of ground water. And we are not even aware of this information. Though India is being naturally gifted country with relatively less natural disasters we are collectively destroying the treasure given to us and artificially inducing disasters. The news we are seeing today about cracking lands, destroyed buildings, land slides, underground sewage breakages in Uttarkhands's Joshimath can happen anywhere in India. We are sitting in the brink of man-induced catastrophe. No need of someone dropping Nuclear bombs on us to kill, we ourself are enough.
